This Workplace Inspection Checklist helps you keep your workplace safe with checks of the environment, fire safety, first aid, material handling, etc.

1. Are the floors clean, dry, and free from debris, clutter, and trip hazards?

2. Are signs posted when floors are wet, such as after washing or spills?

3. Are aisles marked, clear, and unobstructed?

4. Are stairs and landings kept clear and unobstructed?

5. Are stairwells adequately lit, and are steps and treads in good condition?

6. Is furniture and office equipment secure from tripping, and are they appropriate for the work being done?

1. Are doors not blocked?

2. Are routes, signs, and doors clearly marked, and are exit signs easy to see? Are outside entrances and parking lots clearly lit?

3. Are walkways and parking lots free from snow, ice, water, grease, etc.?

4. Are outdoor stairs designed to prevent the buildup of water and snow?

5. Are lighting levels adequate, and are work areas free from glare?

6. Is the air quality adequate?

7. Is the temperature and humidity adequate?

8. Are noise levels appropriate, and are there signs indicating the requirement for hearing protection in areas with high noise levels?

9. Have workers been trained in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)?

10. Are the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations followed?

11. Are the Health and Safety and Violence and Harassment policies in place?

12. Is the "Prevention Starts Here" poster displayed?

13. Is the WSIB "In Case of Injury" poster displayed?

14. Is the Employment Standards Act poster displayed?

15. Is the name of the health and safety representative known?

16. Is the Workplace Inspection Report available?

1. Is emergency lighting adequate, tested, and with a record of annual inspection?

2. Are portable fire extinguishers of the appropriate type, readily available, and inspected?

3. Are fire exit doors in good repair, unlocked, and free from obstruction on both sides?

4. Are fire and emergency alarm systems operational, and are fire exit signs lit?

5. Is a fire and evacuation plan posted

6. Do workers know the plan?

1. Are washrooms clean, and are chemicals properly stored?

2. Is a washing facility available with soap and warm water?

3. Are first aid kits adequately supplied, with an inventory, treatment log, and first aid training manual?

4. Are first aid certificates posted and valid?

5. Is an emergency eyewash (or showers) available and in working order?

6. Do employees know how to access first aid when needed?

1. Are materials neatly and safely stored?

2. Are storage shelves loaded only to capacity, and are heavy, awkward items stored lower?

3. Are step/ladders equipped with non-slip surfaces and in good condition, and are they secured when stored?

4. Are step/ladders positioned and secured safely when in use?

5. Is work done above 3m following the "Working from Heights" policy and procedures?

6. Are dock boards (bridge plates) used when loading or unloading from the dock to the truck?

7. Are racks and platforms loaded only within the limits of their capacity?

8. Have forklift operators received proper training?

1. Are hazardous substances properly labeled, stored, and disposed of?

2. Is a safety data sheet (SDS) available and accessible for each product?

3. Have employees received WHMIS training on the safe use and storage of hazardous substances?
