Playground Surfacing Checklist

Use this Playground Surfacing Checklist to monitor loose-fill depths, inspect for wear or trip hazards, and ensure adequate impact attenuation for safety.

Playground Surfacing Checklist

Impact Absorption & Depth Verification

1. Is the critical fall height of the equipment known, and has the surfacing been verified to meet the corresponding impact attenuation requirements?

Photo Comment

2. For loose-fill surfacing (wood chips, mulch, sand), is the depth verified to be consistent across the entire play area, particularly in high-traffic zones?

Photo Comment

3. Have 'kick-out' areas under swing seats and at slide exits been raked and leveled to restore the required safety depth?

Photo Comment

4. Is there a documented record of the initial installation depth versus the current depth to track material compaction or loss?

Photo Comment
Unitary Surface Condition (Poured-in-Place & Tiles)

1. Has the Poured-in-Place (PIP) rubber been inspected for cracks, holes, or areas where the granules are beginning to flake or 'granulate'?

Photo Comment

2. Are rubber tiles securely adjoined, with no gaps, curling edges, or 'lipping' that could create a tripping hazard?

Photo Comment

3. Is the surface free of excessive wear patterns in high-impact areas that may have reduced the material's elasticity?

Photo Comment

4. Has the surface been checked for hardening or loss of resilience caused by UV exposure or environmental weathering?

Photo Comment
Drainage & Environmental Maintenance

1. Is the sub-base drainage system functioning correctly, with no evidence of standing water or 'pooling' on the surface after rain?

Photo Comment

2. Has the surface been cleared of foreign debris such as glass, sharp stones, or organic matter that could harbor bacteria?

Photo Comment

3. Are weed barriers and borders intact to prevent the migration of surfacing material or the growth of invasive plants?

Photo Comment

4. For sand or bark surfaces, is the material periodically turned or tilled to prevent 'caking' and maintain a loose, absorbent structure?

Photo Comment
Cleanliness & Sanitation Protocols

1. Is the surface regularly cleaned with manufacturer-approved solutions to remove dirt, mold, or mildew?

Photo Comment

2. For indoor or synthetic surfaces, has a sanitization sweep been performed to manage high-touch bacterial risks?

Photo Comment

3. Have stains or spills (e.g., food, oil, or chemicals) been treated promptly to prevent degradation of the rubber or synthetic binders?

Photo Comment
Compliance & Certification

1. Is there a valid HIC (Head Injury Criterion) test report available for the current surfacing installation?

Photo Comment

2. Are all border systems and ramps compliant with accessibility standards, ensuring a smooth transition for mobility aids?
