Pre-use

1. Is there proper personal protective equipment such as safety goggles, gloves, lab coats, long pants, and steel-toe or closed-toe shoes?

3. Has the cylinder been periodically tested by the manufacturer or vendor?

4. Have the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) been read to become familiar with the hazards of the cylinder’s contents?

5. Is there any visible damage on the cylinder, such as dents, corrosion, or burns?

6. Are there no tears in any tubing or hoses, and is there no damage to the regulators?

7. Is the location of the emergency eyewash and showers, fire extinguishers, and evacuation routes known?

Storage

1. Are cylinder caps in place when not in use?

2. Are cylinders stored upright in racks or double-chained?

3. Are cylinders securely chained or strapped at the bottom and top third of their height?

4. Are cylinders not blocking or obstructing any exits or pathways?

5. Are cylinders stored away from excessive heat, continuous dampness, and corrosive chemicals, and kept in dry, cool, well-ventilated areas?

7. Is there a minimum of 20 feet distance or a fire-resistant partition separating oxygen and fuel gases?

10. Are empty cylinders labeled or tagged, with the understanding that a cylinder is considered empty at 25 psi but should never be emptied completely?

Transport

1. Is the regulator detached during transport?

2. Are valves tightened, closed, and covered with a cap?

3. Are proper material handling equipment, such as hand carts with chain links, used to secure cylinders when transporting, even over short distances?

4. Is the cylinder kept in a close-to-upright position, not horizontal?

Regulator

1. Is an approved regulator wrench used when opening and closing valves?

2. Is the regulator installed with a compatible pressure rating, gauge range, and correct CGA fitting?

3. Is there no debris, grease, or contaminant in the cylinder outlet connection?

4. Is the regulator CGA connection inspected for damage?

5. If the regulator is designed to have a washer, are new washers used when changing cylinders?

6. Is the regulator tightly connected without the use of the plumber's tape?

7. Once the regulator is installed, is the outlet valve closed before slowly turning the cylinder valve to one and a half turns?

Leaks

1. Is personal repair of any cylinder leaks avoided?

2. If handling a leaking cylinder can be done safely, is the cylinder moved to a well-ventilated and isolated area away from combustibles, ignition sources, and other flammable materials?

3. If the gas is flammable or toxic, is an appropriate sign placed at the cylinder warning of these hazards?

4. Is the gas supplier notified, and are their instructions followed regarding the return of the cylinder?

5. Are emergency evacuation and response procedures in place and practiced in case the leak becomes uncontrollable and there is a risk of hazardous material release?
