Deep Cleaning for Infection Control

This checklist has been designed to ensure a thorough deep cleaning is done after any infection within care homes to prevent the spread of infection.

Deep Cleaning

1. All consumables appropriately bagged before disposal?

2. Windows opened to facilitate ventilation thus preventing the build-up of fumes from chlorine-based disinfectant solutions?

3. All equipment (re-usable not single use) cleaned and disinfected before removing from the room? Equipment should not be returned to the room until the deep clean has been completed.

4. Window curtains and any soft furnishings laundered or steam cleaned?

5. Linen, towels and other items removed and first placed in a red water soluble (alginate) bag, then tied and placed in a secondary clear bag and tied? When removed from the room, place directly into the nearby laundry hamper/bag/trolley and transfer as soon as possible to the laundry room. Note: laundry must be stored in a designated safe lockable area whilst awaiting laundering or collection from contractor.

7. Lamp shades removed to be wiped, cleaned and disinfected or steam cleaned? If not wipeable with disinfectant or unable to be steam cleaned, are the lamp shades disposed with other waste?

8. Curtain tracks cleaned and disonfected?

9. Picture rails, ledges, rails cleaned and disinfected?

10. Light switches, door knobs cleaned and disinfected?

11. Windows cleaned and disinfected?

13. Bed frame and mattress, bed rails and bumpers cleaned and disinfected?

14. Both sides of the mattress cleaned? Check the cover for visible signs of tears and staining, unzip and check inside cover and foam mattress for stains. If there is evidence of staining, mattress and cover should be replaced.

15. Radiator covers removed, cleaned and disinfected?

16. Skirting boards cleaned and disinfected?

17. Carpets vacuumed followed by steam cleaning or carpet cleaning machine?

18. Flooring if washable cleaned and disinfected?

19. Ensuite cleaned and disinfected - soap dispensers, paper towel holder, bathroom cabinet, shelving, shower, sink, taps, toilet handle, raised toilet seat, toilet, toilet roll holder, waste bin?

20. Room restocked with consumables, e.g. paper towels, PPE, etc.?
