Use this Apartment Inspection Checklist to inspect interiors, electrical systems, plumbing, etc. to assess the condition of all areas of an apartment.

1. Are the exterior doors free from damage

2. Are they fully operational?

3. Are they able to shut and seal properly without sticking?

1. Do exterior locks work and do they have the proper keys for each lock?

2. Is it ensured that none of the locks stick?

3. Do the windows have functional locks?

1. Are there no cracks in the glass panes of the windows?

2. Is it checked to see that they open and close smoothly and securely?

1. Are there secured railings and no chips or cracks in the flooring, walls, or structure?

2. Are there no gaps or raised tiles that could cause you or a guest to trip and fall?

1. Is peeling paint checked?

2. Are sagging gutters checked?

3. Are raised or cracked pavement checked?

1. Are the walls free from dings, holes, and other damage?

2. Are there any paint splatters?

1. Are there no cracked, chipped, or peeled floors?

2. Is the carpet checked?

3. Does the water run clear and is it free from dirt or rusty colors?

2. Is the toilet filled to a normal level and stops running after a few moments?

3. Is the toilet checked for gurgling sounds or slow drainage?

1. Do the hose spigots all work?

2. Are they maintained in winter to prevent the pipes from freezing?

1. Are the blinds pulled up and down to look for damage or usability issues?

1. Are window screens free from holes and rips and do they attach securely to the windows?

2. If they slide up and down, do they work smoothly and don't fall out of the window panes?

1. Are the interior doors checked for cracks, chips, and doorknob problems?

2. Do they all shut properly and stay closed until the knob is turned?

1. Are the window sills in good shape?

2. Are they free from cracks, chips, and other damage?

1. Does the outdoor lighting work properly and adequately illuminate the walkways and the front door?

2. Ideally, are motion detector lights installed outside a ground-floor unit or townhouse rental?

1. Are all locks outside and inside the apartment working correctly?

2. Is the key available to all locks?

1. Is the thermostat tested and the AC and/or heat turned on to ensure it is responsive?

2. If there is a smart thermostat, does it work with the relevant smartphone apps?

1. Is the AC turned on and off to ensure it is working well?

2. Is each vent monitored to feel if the heat is coming from each of them?
