Use the Pool Safety Checklist to ensure proper safety measures like fence integrity, fire safety, etc. are in place for a secure swimming environment.

1. Is the area clean and tidy?

2. Are floor surfaces non-slip, unbroken and maintained in a safe condition?

3. Is the pool deck non-slip and free of irregularities and fittings on walkway?

4. Are steps/stairs/ramps in a safe condition with non-slip surface, and secure handrails where needed?

5. Are doors, gates, fences, locks and latches in good condition and working order?

6. Do the gates close automatically?

7. Are plants and trees safe, non-toxic and in good condition?

8. Is the area adequately shaded?

9. Is there a 4-foot barrier around the entire pool?

10. Are all gates self-latching?

11. Are all gates self-closing?

12. Are all gates lockable at 4 and 1/2 feet?

13. Are locks available for all gates?

1. Is flammable material stored and handled in a safe manner?

2. Are required resources such as floats, pool toys and other equipment stored safely?

3. Are free standing shelves/cupboards secured to wall/floor to ensure stability?

4. Are storage areas labelled appropriately?

5. Are rubbish and waste containers readily available and labelled appropriately?

1. Are chlorine and acids, including empty containers stored in separate locations?

2. Is the register/stock control sheet to detail storage, handling requirements updated?

3. Are current safety data sheet available for hazardous substances?

4. Are hazardous substances stored and labelled appropriately?

5. Eye wash and emergency shower tested to confirm they are in good working order?

6. No smoking signs displayed where chemicals are stored or prepared?

4. Are filter traps clear and adequately guarded to prevent injury to users?

5. Is the swimming pool in a state of good repair?

6. Are ladders/ramps/hydraulic lifts in good condition?

7. Is the depth of the pool prominently and clearly marked - at least 100 mm in size?

8. Is the wading (kids’) pool separated from the main pool by a four-foot barrier?

9. Are pH and chlorine tests kits used to test the water quality regularly?

10. Are pools free of entrapment and disembowelment hazards?

11. Are pool rules posted for community use pools?

12. Are depths marked at the side of the pool for each one-foot change?

13. Is diving from the side of the pool prohibited where pool depths are less than 9 feet deep?

14. Is diving from a diving board prohibited where pool depths are less than 11.5 feet and where the distance to the slope for the shallow end is less than 16 feet?

1. Are safety rules, emergency information and evacuation routes prominently displayed?

2. Is the fire alarm in working order and can the alarm be heard in this area?

3. Is an approved first aid kit readily available and fully stocked?

4. Is a resuscitation chart clearly visible?

5. Are fire hoses/extinguishers in place, clearly marked and have they been serviced in the past 6 months?

6. Is the area around hose/extinguisher clear for a 1 meter radius?

7. Are fire exits signposted, unlocked, not blocked and can they be easily opened?

8. Is a certified lifeguard/designated responsible person on duty whenever children 16 years or younger are within the pool area (community use pools)?

9. Is the required rescue and emergency response equipment situated within the pool area?

10. Is there an emergency action plan in effect including plan implementation training?

1. Are safe operating procedures displayed?

2. Are Chemical goggles or full-face shield are used by the staff?

3. Are the Elbow-length impervious gloves are used by the staff?

4. Is Full length apron used by the staff?
