Use this Crane Checklist for Inspection of overhead cranes and hoists, either for pre-use inspections or monthly safety inspections by authorized personnel.

Crane Inspection

1. Is the load rating marked on each side of the crane or hoist and legible from the floor?

2. Are warning labels clean and legible?

3. Are hooks checked for deformation, cracks, bends, and excessive thread damage?

4. Is the hook safety latch in place and functioning properly?

5. Are the hook attachment and securing means checked?

6. Are hoist chains and end connections checked for excessive wear, twists, distortion interfering with proper function, or stretch?

7. Are the running rope and end connections checked for wear, broken strands, etc.?

8. Are wires, ropes, and chains reeved and seated in the drum grooves properly?

9. Are there any loose, broken, or damaged parts on the hoist, lever, trolley, bridge, runway, beam clamp, or electric systems?

10. Is there deformation of the load block, drums, and sheaves checked?

11. Is the placement of end stops checked?

12. Are there any loose items that could fall?

13. Are pendant controls damaged (checked for damage or missing labels)?

14. Are all pendant controls operating properly and moving in the right direction?

15. Are all functional operating mechanisms checked for maladjustment and unusual sounds?

16. Is deterioration or leakage in lines, tanks, valves, drain pumps, and other parts of air or hydraulic systems checked?

17. Is the hoist, bridge, and trolley braking system checked for proper operation?

18. Are the trolley and bridge on track and functioning smoothly?

19. Is there little or no hook drift when releasing controls in the up or down position?

20. Is the limit device and switch functioning properly without a load on the hook?
